Upclose Review: A Techno Dream Come True

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the very first edition of Upclose, nestled in the stunning surroundings of Spaarnwoude-park (just outside of Amsterdam). From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this was going to be an experience unlike any other. Awakenings has always been known for its grand scale and star-studded lineups, but this intimate festival aimed to create a closer connection between the dancefloor and the artists. As someone constantly looking for fresh, transformative festival experiences, I was curious to see how this new venture from Awakenings would unfold. Spoiler alert: it was everything I hoped for and more.

The Music: A Sunday Symphony of Techno

Sunday’s lineup at Upclose was a carefully curated journey through the many facets of techno. The harder sounds were represented in full force by the likes of 999999999 and I Hate Models, whose relentless energy and pounding beats turned the dancefloor into a sea of euphoria. Colin Benders & Speedy J delivered a mesmerising performance that showcased their seamless synergy and innovative soundscapes.

Underground textures were beautifully explored by artists like AKUA, ALTINBAS & BORDER ONE, and DJ Fuckoff, each bringing their unique flair to the festival. Cynthia Spiering and Justine Perry provided deeper, rhythmic techno journeys that captivated the crowd.

Emerging talents like Flits and Hitam impressed with their fresh, innovative sounds, while veteran acts like Freddy K & The Lady Machine reminded us why they are considered legends in the scene. The live performances by PHARA and KINK & RAREDUB added an extra layer of dynamism, proving that techno is ever-evolving and full of surprises.

The day ended with a bang as Joris Voorn’s “Trip to Galaxy” set took us on an auditory adventure, blending hypnotic and energetic beats that set the perfect tone for the day. Nina Kraviz shifted gears with her special house set, adding a refreshing twist that kept everyone grooving.

Stages and Location: Immersive and Magical

Upclose transformed Spaarnwoude into a techno wonderland. The lush greenery and tranquil waters of the location created a serene, almost mystical backdrop for the festival. The natural beauty of the surroundings added a layer of enchantment to the event, making every moment feel special.

Each stage was a work of art, featuring 360-degree views that allowed everyone to be part of the action. The absence of a backstage erased the usual barriers, creating an inclusive and immersive environment where everyone felt like a part of the performance. Signature pieces from Awakenings’ Gashouder events, like the iconic disco ball and the infamous mirror, were thoughtfully scattered around the site, delighting long-time fans.

As day turned to night, the site truly came alive. The sunset over the water marked a magical halfway point, casting a golden hue over the dancefloor and infusing us with renewed energy. The transition from daylight to twilight was seamless, as the festival grounds lit up with vibrant colours and dazzling lights. This transformation added an electrifying atmosphere, making the night feel even more alive and immersive.

Area 97 was particularly captivating. By day, sunlight beamed from one towering pillar to another, casting dramatic shadows and illuminating the dancers below. As night fell, these pillars came to life, transforming the area into an ethereal landscape of glowing beams. It felt as though we were dancing in a futuristic techno temple, completely absorbed in the moment.

The spacious grounds allowed for exploration and relaxation, with plenty of spots to sit and take in the stunning views. The combination of natural beauty and cutting-edge production created a setting that was both expansive and intimate, making the experience truly unforgettable.

Atmosphere: Unity and Pure Energy

The atmosphere at Upclose was electric from start to finish. The energy was palpable, with everyone dancing non-stop as the day rolled into the night. It was a diverse crowd, with people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to celebrate their shared love of techno. Every stage was vibrant, no matter where we walked, the crowd was always moving, always alive.

Reflecting on a Transformative Experience

Upclose was a powerful reminder of why I love music festivals. It was a celebration of music, community, and the joy of dancing together under the open sky. Even days after the event, I am still buzzing with energy and excitement, eager to share this incredible experience with others. Awakenings has truly outdone themselves, something extraordinary for the music community to enjoy and revel in. This festival is not to be missed, mark your calendar and see you May 17-18, 2025.
